This 1969 Lynx B Formula Vee carries an unusually long and well-documented competition history spanning multiple decades and regions. Built by Fred Clark, the car raced extensively on the West Coast, in Oklahoma, and throughout the upper Midwest, accumulating significant race mileage while remaining structurally sound. Despite multiple incidents over its life, the frame was never bent, and the car was continually rebuilt, adapted, and returned to competition rather than retired.
Over the years, the Lynx B passed through several knowledgeable owners, including David (Dave) Jones, who raced the car from the early 1980s through 2001 across SCCA Chicago Region, Midwest Council, California, Oklahoma, and Ohio. During that period, the car was consistently developed and maintained, with configuration changes made to suit different drivers while remaining competitive enough to qualify for the SCCA National Championship.
At various points, the car was converted and later returned to Lynx B specification, preserving its identity while adapting to different eras of racing. The engine and transmission were prepared by respected Formula Vee specialists, contributing to its reputation as a strong and reliable runner. The car later returned to active vintage competition with VSCDA, where it raced regularly from 2014 through 2016 before being placed into storage.
Purchased in 2022 by Jeff Tapolci, the car remains largely as last raced, carrying a current VRG logbook and accompanied by spare components including a transaxle and front beam. Well known among long-time Formula Vee racers, it represents the kind of car that defines the class — raced hard, rebuilt often, and kept alive by the people who cared enough to keep it going.
